Books turning into birds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A stack of three books sits at the bottom of the forearm, topped by an open book with its pages fanned out. Above it, open books rise in a diagonal line and gradually become silhouetted birds in flight. The linework is delicate, with soft grey shading on the book covers and solid black ink on the birds, and the design is set against plain pale skin.

The archive sat in a hollow of the old cargo ring, where the air still smelled of glue and mould and shelves rose into the dark like cliffs. Ysolde pulled down a stack of three books, their spines split and their covers gone soft as cloth, and set them on the bench. Oren's rule was that nothing read twice could stay on station. The readers were all going down to the terraces, where the birds had come back to nest in the dead cranes. Nobody had seen a real bird in eleven years, only the grey drones that clicked over the hull like beetles.
She opened the top volume to its last chapter. Oren cut the binding with a soldering iron and folded each leaf into a wing as the press sighed. The first page lifted, caught the vent draught, and slipped out through the hatch, a dark flick against the emergency light. Then the second, then the third, until the whole stack was a flurry of paper gulls wheeling up the shaft toward the sky-glass.
Oren wiped his hands on his coat. 'Now somebody will read them who has never opened a book.' Ysolde watched the last bird vanish into the vent and found she was smiling. Far below, in the cracked terraces, something answered the paper wings with a long, thin whistle.
