Brain wrapped in oval rings on an arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A brain is shown side-on at the centre of the design, with its folds and gyri drawn in fine black outline. Several overlapping black ellipses wrap around it like orbits or waves, and the cerebellum at the lower back is filled with dense dotted and hatched shading. The design is entirely black ink on pale skin, photographed straight on against a plain background.

The valve set hummed all night in the back room of the Sgeir Dubh station, and by the second winter Tomas Ferrier could tell from the hum alone which way the weather was going. He kept a pencil behind his ear and a logbook open on the sill, and every hour he wrote what came through the headphones in block capitals, the way the training manual insisted: no adjectives, no guesses.

The trouble began in February with a message nobody else on the coast could raise. Three short, one long, over and over, from somewhere beyond the Rockall bank, always at the same minute past four. The Admiralty men said it was interference from the new cables. Tomas said nothing, because on the nights he listened closest he heard something under the dots, a slow swell rising and falling like a tide that had forgotten where the shore was.

In April he drew the rings. He sketched the signal as a loop, then another, and saw that it fanned out in ovals, each one carrying the message a little wider, until it reached whoever sat at the far end of the wire. He did not sleep for three nights. On the fourth the dots stopped, and in their place came a single word in plain English, spelled slowly. HOME.

He logged it, closed the book and walked down to the jetty in the grey light. Nothing out there but the swell and a gull working the wind. Under the last entry he wrote RECEIVED, and went to bed for the first time in a month.
