Brave lettering with arrow on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the side of an ankle or foot, showing the word BRAVE in flowing script with a small arrow across the top of the first letter. The lettering uses smooth, even linework in a single dark ink, with soft skin tones and a warm, slightly grainy tint across the frame. The word sits diagonally across the centre of the image against a blurred background.

Lost property at Thornbeck Halt is a drawer in the ticket office and a cupboard that smells of wet umbrellas, so I put it in the drawer with the glove and the child's wellington and tried not to think about it.

It was ash wood, the shaft cut straight and sanded, with a brass-coloured nock and a small fletching bound in green thread. Wrapped round the shaft was a strip of card, and on the card someone had written in careful pencil: Keep this one. You'll need it on Thursday. I didn't know whose handwriting it was. I still don't.
On Thursday a girl of about nine came to the window with her father, asking whether anyone had handed in a bow. Her name was Imogen Stroud and she had been practising in the car park with a bent hazel stick, because her gran had told her the arrow would find its own way. I gave her the arrow. She turned it over, read the card, and went very still, the way you do when you have been holding your breath longer than you meant to.
"Brave," she said, to nobody in particular. Then she ran for the train, the fletching bobbing above the crowd, and I stood at the window until the platform was empty and the drawer was only a drawer again.
