Mrs Ansell brought the frame in wrapped in a bedsheet, the way some people carry a sleeping dog. It was heavier than its size suggested, gilt laid over something darker, and the scrolls had been picked at by a century of damp. Joseph Pyle asked her what was going in it. She said nothing yet. She only wanted the frame mended so that it would stop looking like a mouth.

He worked on it through October with the shop window dark and the radiator ticking. Beneath the flaking purple lacquer he found a paper backing gone brown as weak tea, and under that a strip of card with pencilled writing: Elsie, aged nine, the hair not right. Someone had cut a portrait to sit in the frame, a child's attempt at the Bride, all height and a white streak like lightning through green, and had given up on the face. Pyle sat with that for a long time. He thought about how a child draws the thing that frightens them so that it will stay on the page and stop following them home.

On the last evening he polished the glass and saw, reflected over his own shoulder, a woman standing in the doorway with a lamp that was not lit. She asked whether the frame was ready. He said it was and handed it across, and she held it against her chest the way the card had been held, and did not look at the back.
