Broken heart with BE FRIENDS lettering
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A simple black outline drawing of a heart split into two halves along a jagged crack. The words BE FRIENDS are set in plain capital letters across the halves, with BE FRIE on the left and ST NDS on the right, and the crack breaks through the middle of the lettering. The linework is clean and even with solid black fill, and the design is centred on a white background.

The crack ran straight through the middle of the paper heart before Dilys had finished folding it, and she blamed the cheap biro, then the damp in the back kitchen, then you. You held the two halves up to the paraffin lamp at Number 9 Harrow Row, BE FRIE on your side and ST NDS on hers, and you laughed until she threw a tea towel at your head. Outside, the tip smoked grey against the dusk.

The 7.14 to Cardiff left from Ynysfach halt at seven, and by half six the platform was already a wet line of coats. Her mam had packed sandwiches in greaseproof paper and a jar of pickled onions nobody wanted. Dilys kept checking the clock above the booking hut as if it might have moved. You had told her you did not mind, which was a lie the size of the valley, and she had told you she would write every week, which she probably would until the first winter ate the postage money.
When the train came round the bend, its lamp swinging down the cutting like a helmet lamp in a dark gallery, she pushed the other half of the heart into your palm and folded your fingers over it. "Stick them back together when you're sad," she said. "They'll still meet up at the crack, you daft article." Then the doors banged and she was gone, a face at the glass pressing its lips together to keep from crying.
Later you sat on the low wall with both halves in your lap. Nobody had told you a broken thing could fit so neatly back together, only that it would never look quite the same. You pressed the edges until they met, and the jagged line of black showed through the seam, but the letters still ran across it, BE FRIE on one side and ST NDS on the other, and you decided that was close enough to be going on with.
