A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

I opened the blue envelopes on Thursdays, when the lorries from the east came in slow and the night shift had nothing to do but read what people were carrying. Most of it was invoices. Tomas Weir's letters were not invoices. They came from a village on the far side of the river, addressed in a hand that leaned forward as if in a hurry, and they contained nothing a customs officer could tax. Only one word, written down the page three times, each line sloping into the next like the steps of a short stair. Under the last one sat a small heart, drawn with a single unbroken turn of the pen.

I was supposed to log them as personal correspondence and pass them on. For eleven months I did. Then a reply arrived from the other direction, in a woman's cramped capitals, and it carried the same word, and I understood that the two of them had been sending the same sentence back and forth across a border that had no interest in it at all.

I should have sent it on. Instead I held her reply under the lamp, tracing the loops with my thumb, and thought about how the word looked different each time, a little more worn at the edges. On the last line she had written nothing at all, only the heart.

I stamped the envelope Examined, as the rules require, and then I did a thing the rules do not. I sealed it again with a dab of glue, pressed the flap flat with my palm, and dropped it back into the Thursday bag for the far side, where it would be read by the right person.
