Dear Hollis, the heat out past the dry wash has finally broken, though you'd never know it from the way the prickly pears are sulking in the yard behind Mrs Varela's place. I counted nine pads on the big one by the fence and every last one has a spine out of place, like it's been arguing with the wind. I've taken to sitting with my boots off on the step at dusk, watching them, because they're the only thing out here that keeps its colours after the sun has gone.

You asked whether I'd sold the truck. I haven't. The man from the feed store offered forty dollars for the spare tyres and I told him they were bolted to something I'm not ready to let go of. That's a poor excuse and you know it, but the yellow roses came up along the ditch in April, three of them, and I thought if I could get them to the window before they dropped I'd have something to show you when you came back for the funeral papers.

I brought one in. It's in the glass jar on the sill, going brown at the edges now, but the bud by its stem never opened, just stayed red and tight as a cherry. I'm leaving it there. Come see it when you can, and bring the good coffee, not the tin one from the cantina.
