Caduceus tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A caduceus, showing a winged staff with two snakes coiled around it, is drawn in a single-line outline on the forearm. The linework is smooth and even, with the wings and snake bodies rendered as continuous lines. The ink looks reddish-pink with pale highlights, which may reflect fresh or healing skin, and the plain background sits softly out of focus.

Dear Oriel, the rain at Corran Gap has not let up since the ferrymen's feast, and the messenger road is a river of red mud. I have the Staff of Two Accords strapped across my pack, wrapped in oilcloth, and every time the mules slip I think of Captain Dunmore asking me to bring it back unbent. The envoys from Sarn are waiting at the lower bridge. They will not cross until they see it.

Last night at the relay house I unwrapped it by the stove to check the gilt. The wings at the crown are beaten as thin as wet paper, and the two serpents climb the shaft in a single unbroken coil, one turning left, one turning right, so that they meet and part a dozen times before they reach the top. Old Brannoch, the keeper, said the smith made them without lifting the chisel once. I did not believe him until I ran my thumb along the line and found no seam.

This morning a boy from the bridge came up the track to say the envoys have sent a message of their own. They want the serpents turned outward, not in, as Sarn's staffs are. Brannoch laughed until he coughed and told the boy the smith has been dead forty years. So we will carry it as it is. I think a truce should be allowed to look like what it is: two things that cannot stop circling each other, held up in the light.

I will be at the bridge by Thursday if the river allows. Keep the lamp lit in the east window. If they ask you which way the snakes face, tell them they face each other, and that nobody has yet found a way to make them stop.
