White script lettering reading Let It Be on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a wrist with the words Let It Be written in a looping, cursive script in white ink, with the lettering stacked over two lines. The linework is fine and even, and the pale ink stands out against the pinkish skin with a slightly raised, healed look. The lettering sits near the centre of the frame, with a blurred, colourful blanket behind the arm.

Sit yourselves down on that coal sack and mind the kettle, for this is the tale of Nell Harrow and the barge Patience, and how she learned the one thing a boat on the Trent cannot be taught. Nell had thirty years at the tiller and she had fought every current the river owned. She shoved and hauled and cursed the lock-keepers at Sallow Lock, and when the Patience ran aground on the Ridlow bend in the February flood, she took a pole to the mud as if she could heave the whole river onto the bank.

Three days she worked at it. Her husband Tom, God rest him, would have sat on the cabin roof with his pipe and waited. Nell would not. On the third morning the water had risen a foot, and the barge lifted of its own accord, slow as a sleeper turning over, and drifted clear onto open water. She stood on the deck with the pole in her hands and no notion what to do with them.
There's a saying the old bargees keep, cut into the lintel of the lock house: let it be. Nobody knows who cut it. Nell had walked under it ten thousand times and never once read it, but that morning she did. She laid the pole across the gunwale, sat down on the hatch cover, and let the river carry her wherever it pleased.
They say she reached Hull eleven days late with a full hold and a lighter heart, and that she never again raised her voice at the tide. Now pass me that cup, and mind you don't go telling the river what to do.
