Stylised script tattoo on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a stacked, stylised script tattoo on the inner forearm, set against dark denim. The design uses bold vertical strokes with looping curls and hooked terminals, forming a compact vertical cluster. The ink is a single dark tone with solid, even fills and smooth edges, and the arm fills most of the frame.

The key chattered against the brass for the third time before Ada Pell lifted her head from the log. Forty days out from Valparaíso, the *Corinthia* had gone quiet except for the faint signal in her headphones, thin as a moth against a lamp. She copied it in pencil, letter by letter, the way her father had taught her on the telegraph at Hull.

Mr Harrow, the second mate, came down the companionway with a lamp and a cup of tea gone cold. He read over her shoulder for a long moment. The message was not plain Morse. It was a run of stacked groups: a tall stroke, a curl like a hooked line, a short bar crossed by another, all packed into a column that no codebook on board admitted to knowing. "Weather?" he asked. "Not weather," she said. "Someone is spelling something in the old shorthand and sending it down the whole Horn route."

They worked through the night, matching each group against the ship's books, then against the cipher pages her father had kept in his own cramped hand. Near four bells the pattern gave way to a single word and a time, two bells after noon, with a pilot waiting off the Falklands. The sender's call sign belonged to the station at Hull where her father had worked, a station closed since 1931.

Ada tore the sheet from the pad and tucked the pencil behind her ear. She tapped out her reply in the old style, slow and careful, the way you would knock on a door you were not sure still had anyone behind it.
