Cake slice with cherries on the side

Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A slice of layered cake topped with a cloud of cream and three round cherries, drawn with a bold black outline. The fill mixes solid black bands, stippled dots and open white highlights to suggest layers and texture. The black and grey ink is photographed close up on skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Marta on Harrow Skerry kept one oven and one rule: a cake went out whole or not at all. When the storms came in from the west the boats stayed in harbour, the men grew thin and quarrelsome, and the children stopped asking when the bread would come.

One March, Tomas Reyne rowed across the sound with a sack of flour he had won off a Dutchman at cards and no notion how to bake with it. He found her kneading in the dark with the shutters closed. She did not ask why he had come. She told him to sift, and he sifted until the flour hung in the lamplight like a second weather.

Layers, she said, were patience. Each sheet of sponge had to rest before the next went on, or the whole thing slumped. The cream she whipped from a jug of goat's milk and a fistful of snow kept in a barrel under the boat shed. On top she set three cherries from a jar she had been saving since her husband drowned: one for the boats, one for the men, and one, she said, for whoever was foolish enough to row out in March.

They cut the cake at dawn and carried the slices out on a board. Tomas ate his standing in the wind and found it dense with something that was not sugar. The cherries were sour. Nobody on the island said much that day, but the boats went out the next morning, and Tomas stayed on Skerry for the rest of his life.
