Small camera with heart lens on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small camera outline sits on the inner forearm, with a heart drawn inside the circular lens. The linework is thin and dark, with some shading on the body of the camera and a slightly stippled texture. The ink is solid black and the background is a soft, out-of-focus view of a person wearing a dark top and a beaded necklace.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow shut the Carrick road by four o'clock, and by six there were only two lamps lit in the whole valley: the one over my front door and the one in the window of the room upstairs, where the stranger had asked to sleep. He arrived without a bag, only a battered camera on a leather strap and a damp envelope of prints. I gave him the room over the kitchen because it was the warmest, and because he didn't ask me to.

In the morning he was gone, the bed made tight as a drum, and on the windowsill sat the camera with a note tucked under its strap. Hold the lens to the light. Don't open the back. The glass ring around the lens had a small heart scratched into it, the sort of mark a child makes with a pin. I held it up to the grey window as he'd said, and for a moment the snow outside turned the colour of milk, then cleared.

Three winters on, a woman with a leather satchel came up the valley road asking for a room. She carried the same damp envelope and stood too close to the fire in the same way. She looked at the camera on my shelf and said nothing for so long that the kettle boiled over. Then she said, "He always did leave the best things behind."

I gave her the room over the kitchen. That night we developed the roll she'd brought in the cellar by the light of a red bulb, and the first frame to rise in the tray was the inn itself, snow to the sills, one lamp burning in the upstairs window, and beneath it, small and certain, a figure at the glass, waving.
