Camper van and roses on an upper arm
Traditional · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A bold traditional-style tattoo of a turquoise and silver camper van with black outlines and shaded windows, set among large red roses with green leaves. The linework is heavy and the colours are saturated, with soft shading on the roses and van body. The tattoo fills the frame across the shoulder and upper arm of a person wearing a navy vest top, with the rest of the body cropped out.

The van came over the hill above Morwenstow with its wipers going, though it had not rained since Tuesday. Nell had bought it from a vicar in Redruth for forty pounds and a box of tinned peaches, and the colour under the road dust was the green-blue of shallow water over sand, the exact shade her mother used to call Sunday.

Her mother had left in that van the spring Nell turned nine, and had come back once, in the rain, barefoot, with a ring of red roses painted round each headlamp. Nobody in the village could say who had done the painting. Nell spent three winters rebuilding the engine on the kitchen floor, and when the last bolt went in she found, tucked under the passenger seat, a tin of enamel the colour of a cut cherry and a brush worn flat to the ferrule.
She painted one rose on the bonnet at a lay-by near Bude, then another on the side panel where the rust had eaten a hole the size of a fist. By the time she reached the cliffs at Hartland the van looked as though a hedge had grown up around it. A woman walking a grey whippet stopped at the gate, shaded her eyes, and said, "Well, that's her, then," and walked on before Nell could ask who.
Nell sat with the engine ticking and the door hanging open. She dipped the brush once more and painted a small red flower on the tailgate, low down, where only someone looking for it would find it.
