Neo-traditional colour tattoo of a blue camper van with red, orange and yellow daisies and rainbow arcs on the upper arm.

Camper van and daisies on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a blue and white VW camper van seen from the front, with a windscreen, headlights and a round badge, set against a pink, yellow and green rainbow arc. Red, orange and yellow daisies surround the van, and the bold dark outlines and flat, solid fills give it a retro feel. The design sits on the outer upper arm, with a lace top visible at the edge of the frame.

Mind the gull on the bollard, it has been waiting for my fish since the tide turned. Now, where was I. Ah yes, the blue van.

It came off the Penzance ferry in the summer they painted the harbour wall, a Volkswagen the colour of a kingfisher's back, with a white roof gone the colour of weak tea. Nobody saw who drove it. They only saw the daisies. Someone had painted them on the bumpers in orange and red, and the bonnet badge had been polished until it winked like a coin. Old Mrs Tremayne swore the van had a rainbow across its nose, but she also swore her cat could read, so take that with salt.

Two boys from the boatyard followed it up the cliff road one night, bicycles creaking, torches bobbing. They found it parked above the lighthouse with the doors open and nobody inside. Only a tin of paint, a half-eaten loaf, and a sun-faded map of the coast with every cove circled in yellow. They sat on the running boards until dawn, waiting for the owner to come back for the bread.

The owner never came. What came instead, every spring after, was a single daisy painted on the harbour wall, and the boys learned to read the petals. Each one pointed toward a cove nobody had thought worth visiting. That is how the lads found the seal colony, and the wreck with the gold bell, and the girl who could sing to the gulls. Some say the van is still up on the cliff road. Some say it drives itself down to the water when the tide's right.
