Orange and red campervan on an arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a Volkswagen campervan in side and front view, with a yellow roof, a red body and a yellow front panel carrying a VW roundel. Bold dark outlines define the vehicle, with simple highlights on the windows, headlights and wheels. The campervan fills most of the frame against a plain skin background, with a white striped top visible at the right edge.

Gather in, the lot of you, and keep your hands off the kettle. This is the night the orange van came down Gantry Lane. Nobody had ever seen it parked there before, a little bus with a yellow roof and a red body, sitting under the sodium lamp as if the council had posted it there. Mrs Oddie from the flats swore it had been there since Tuesday, and she was never wrong about cars.

Dessie Carr found the keys in a jam jar of marbles on the dashboard, which tells you everything about the owner and nothing at all. He was nineteen, worked the bread ovens from four, and had never driven anything bigger than a delivery trolley. Still, he turned the key, and the engine coughed twice like an old man getting out of a bath, then caught. The headlights came on round and bright as a pair of surprised eyes.

He drove it out past the cranes, past the shuttered chippy and the bridge where the gulls sleep, and every light in the city seemed to lean over to watch him. In the glovebox was a map folded into a hundred squares and a pencilled note: keep going until the sugar runs out. So he did. Out along the estuary road until the sky went the colour of marmalade and the marker posts ran out.

At half five he crept back into Gantry Lane and parked exactly where he had found it. He left the marbles in the jar and put the jar in the bakery window beside the first tray of loaves, where it still sits. Mrs Oddie says if you look closely at the round badge on the van's nose, you can see a little dust of sugar on it. Don't ask me how. Now, who wants the last cup?
