Candle tattoo on the back of a hand
Traditional · Hand · Colour · Photo
A small candle sits upright in a golden holder with a yellow and orange flame, surrounded by short black rays. The bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills are typical of traditional tattooing. The tattoo is centred on the back of the hand, with a partial tattoo visible at the upper left edge and the fingertips at the lower right.

The lamp-man of Harrow Dene walked the levels every night before the shift bell, and he carried one candle in a brass holder shaped like a saucer with a curled handle. Nobody in the village could say when he had first come down the drift road, only that the candle had always been lit when he reached the pit head, and that it never guttered, not even in the wet wind that came up off the slag heaps.

When the roof came down at the Maudlin seam, Tom Pryce was on the wrong side of it, with three others and a boy named Ned who was barely fourteen. They sat in the black with their picks across their knees and counted the hours by the drip of water. Ned asked whether the lamp-man would find them. His mother told him the lamp-man found only those who had been careful, and Ned said he had been careful, and then he cried until he slept.
Tom did not sleep. He saw, far off down the dark gallery, a small yellow light coming steady along the rails. It stopped at the fall and the flame stood straight up in the still air, and a hand that was not quite a hand reached through the gap and set a candle on the stone shelf where the rock had split. Tom thought it was only the gas. Then he understood that the light had been waiting for someone to ask it the right way, and he had never once in his life been polite to the dark.
When the rescuers broke through two days later, the candle was still burning on the shelf, and the brass holder was warm to touch. Ned swore he had seen the lamp-man's hand. Tom said nothing, but every shift after that he left a penny beside the rail for the man who lit the way.
