Caterpillar on a hookah and red mushrooms

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon caterpillar in a pink outfit and hat, sitting on a red fly agaric mushroom and smoking a teal hookah whose blue tube curls across the design. Two red toadstools with white spots fill the lower edge, and soft green and yellow bokeh-style shading forms the background. The bold outlines, smooth colour blending and rounded character forms give the piece a playful, illustrative look.

Dear Nell,

The tide went out before breakfast again, which the postmaster says means nothing, and I have decided to believe him. I am writing this sitting on the spotted toadstool at the end of the lighthouse steps, where the mushrooms grow taller than the chapel roof and the fishermen won't land after dark.

Mr Gage lives on the biggest one. He is a caterpillar, and a dignified one, in a pink smoking jacket with frogged buttons and a velvet hat tilted over his horns. He keeps a teal hookah on the lee side of the rocks, and its blue tube runs down the shingle to a rockpool where he dips it between puffs. The smoke rises in slow rings and drifts out over the water. Yesterday he asked me the time. I told him it was half past nobody's business, and he laughed so hard a ring escaped out of his ears.

Father says every visitor to Pell leaves with something, a shell or a sunburn or a debt. So I asked Mr Gage what he would take if he were leaving. He thought about it for a long while, turning the mouthpiece in his fingers, and then said he would take the lighthouse lamp and keep it on his tongue like a boiled sweet. I said that sounded uncomfortable. He agreed it was, and blew me a perfect smoke ring that hung over the harbour wall, wobbling and pink at the edges.

The Thursday boat is due, and I have not packed. I might stay one more week, if Mr Gage will have me. Tell Mother the cat is not to be trusted with the kippers.

Your loving sister, Winnie
