Cannabis plant in a crescent moon on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A realistic cannabis plant with a central bud and spreading serrated leaves sits inside a dark circular shape edged by a pale crescent. The leaves are shaded with smooth greens and black, giving depth and a photographic finish. Colour ink dominates the design, set against the black background and the skin of the arm.

The band has started its third run through Blue Moon Waltz when you slip out through the fire door, the parcel of cuttings held under your arm like a loaf. Behind the Gilded Stag the allotments run down toward the canal, and over the chimney stacks the moon hangs thin as a paring from Mags's kitchen knife. She is already waiting by the cold frame, her good coat buttoned wrong, her torch pointed at the gravel.

She has kept this plot since Walter died, forty years of bean poles and one greenhouse with a cracked pane she mends with brown parcel tape. The plant she calls Old Sal came from a seed her brother posted from Kent in a tobacco tin, and it has grown taller than the frame, its fingered leaves spreading like the hands of a clock that has forgotten the hour. Mags tells you it will only flower once the nights draw in and the light stops pushing at it. She says this as if the moon itself had made a promise to her.
You kneel and unwrap the cuttings while the music rolls faintly through the brick wall. Mags cups a bud in her palm, turning it so the silver catches, and says Walter would have danced with her by now, bad hip or not. You do not argue. You take the scissors from her pocket and cut the last stem clean.
When you go back inside, the lanterns are swinging over the floor and the waltz is ending. The leaves are cool in your coat pocket. Through the high window the crescent slides behind the chimney, and for a moment the whole dark circle of the sky looks like a plate someone has set down carefully on the roof.
