Red poppy on a shoulder blade
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A red poppy in full bloom sits at the top of a long stem with serrated grey-green leaves that curve down across the upper back. The petals are filled with red and orange tones, with darker shading at the centre and edges, and the leaves are shaded in grey and green. The design is set against pale skin, with the flower placed over the shoulder blade and the stem running diagonally down towards the spine.

Gone two, and the ward has that held-breath quiet it gets once the buzzers stop. I'm at the drugs cupboard doing the controlled-drugs count for the second time, because the morphine register came out one short and Sister Yeo taught me never to trust a sum that feels right. The fridge hums. Somewhere down bay three someone is saying 'Mum' in their sleep.

Grace Adeyemi's grandson came in at half ten with a jam jar. He'd cut a single poppy from the verge outside his flat, the stem still tacky with milk, and he wanted it on her locker because she'd asked for 'the red one' and nobody could work out what she meant. Grace taught infants at Hollins Road for thirty-one years, and she still corrects my spelling on the whiteboard.
I fill the jar at the sluice sink. The flower is bigger than it looked outside, its petals crumpled like silk that's been folded in a drawer, and the centre is a dark knot of stamens around the seed head. The leaves are serrated and grey-green, a little dusty, and when I set the stem in the water one leaf tips over the rim and lies flat on the locker as if it's trying to read the chart.
When I come back from the count at four, a petal has come loose and landed on the morphine register, right over the column I'd been checking. I don't move it. I write the figure down, initial it, and leave the petal where it is, red against the ruled white, until the day staff come in and ask what on earth that is.
