Small stylised D with sparkles on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a stylised black letter D with a swirling tail sits on pale skin, shown in close view. Two teal four-pointed sparkles sit to the upper right of the letter. The black linework is bold and solid, with light shading in the letter, and the tattoo is centred in the frame against a plain background.

The sign over the door of Marram House had lost its middle letter in a February gale, so for three summers the guests walked in under a word that read like a misprint. Mrs Oakes would not pay for new paint. She said the sea had taken what it wanted and the rest could make do.

It was Ivy, the girl who came up from the chandler's on Saturdays, who fixed it. She had a pot of black enamel and a steady hand, and she painted a D as tall as a child, its tail curling down past the hinge like a wave that had thought better of breaking. Then, because she was fourteen and bored of being sensible, she dabbed four sparkles beside it with the teal left over from the lifeboat hull.
Mrs Oakes was furious for a whole afternoon. Then a commercial traveller in a bowler hat stopped on the step, read the new sign aloud twice, and asked whether the house had been named after a dream. He booked three nights and wrote a letter that filled a column in the county paper. By August there was a queue on the front stairs, and nobody asked what the D stood for.
Ivy never told them. Some mornings I still see her on the ladder with the sun behind her, flicking a last spot of teal onto the bottom of the sign so it catches the light off the water. The black has faded a little since. The sparkles have not.
