The ship's bell had struck three before you noticed the captain's hand shaking over the logbook, and by then the fair wind had already turned its back on the Azores. You were nineteen, a clerk with ink on your cuffs, and you had been told the words painted above the galley door were a superstition left by a cook who drowned off the Horn. Seize the day, the old man said, tapping the faded letters with one knuckle. Nobody aboard seizes anything but the rail.

The weeks went grey. Rain ran down the porthole in curling lines like the flourishes you copied onto the manifests, and you counted the knots, the biscuits and the days until Valparaiso, where your sister was supposed to be waiting with a bolt of blue cotton and a husband you had never met. You wrote letters home every Sunday and fed most of them to the stove. Seize the day sounded like something a man says with a glass in his hand.
On the fortieth morning the lookout called out a sail that was on no chart, a brig with her colours struck and drifting with no one at the wheel. The captain ordered the boats kept at the davits. You were the one who went across with the lantern, and you found the wheel lashed to a sea chest and, on the chart table, a single sheet in a looping hand: we have been waiting for someone to ask. You folded it into your pocket before the others could see.
You did not tell the captain. You rowed back with the paper against your ribs, climbed the side and, for the first time, took the helm yourself. You turned her into the squall and let the canvas crack like a whip. The old man watched from the companionway, then came up beside you, took the pen from his coat and, beneath the faded motto, wrote the date in his slow careful hand.
