The mortar had gone along the east wall of Carrow Keep, and the rain had found its way into the vestry, so when you climbed up for your grandfather's ledgers you put your hand on a loose slate and felt paper beneath it. The letter was tied with thread that had been red once, and the ink had run in the damp, though the hand was clear enough to read.

Hester wrote to her brother Owen in the careful slope of someone who had been taught by a nun. She told him the gatehouse lamp had burned every night since the spring, that the ewes had come down from the hill thin but living, and that the bread at Wrenfield was no better than the bread at Carrow. You can hear her voice in the lines about the lamp, a little stubborn, a little tired, and beneath it the same word written out in full at the foot of the page: agape. She had explained it to him once, the love that gives and does not keep account. She had signed her name with an H that curled back under itself like a thread pulled tight.

You turn the sheet over and find no reply, only a second scrap in a different hand, dated a month later, which says simply that Owen's boat did not come in and that she must keep the lamp. You stand with the wet paper in your palm while the wind works through the broken arrow slits, and you think about who has kept it burning since.

You go down to the gatehouse before dark. The oil is old and the wick is black, but when you strike the flint the flame takes, and it throws your shadow long across the flagstones toward the open gate, as if someone had gone out to meet it.
