Cartoon bears in a galaxy bear outline

Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon bears in astronaut-style helmets floating in space, with a pink donut, a small ringed planet, stars and round gold shapes around them. The whole scene is framed inside a bear-head silhouette filled with a dark galaxy. The linework is bold and dark, with flat, smooth fills, and sparkle-like highlights on the stars. Bright pinks, oranges, teals and purples dominate the colour palette.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Pip, the donut stall on Halcyon Ring finally opened on Tuesday, though the proofer hums a flat note every time the docking bay cycles, so forgive the sugar on this page. Dunnock insists the hum is a good sign. He says the oven is listening for customers. I say it is listening for the next meteor shower, which is what the ring's engineers say about most things.

We spend our mornings fishing the gold coins out of the dark. They drift past the window in loose spirals, the way fish move in a tank, and the station pays us a wage for every one we catch in our nets. Dunnock is quick and I am careful, so between us we have clipped more coins than the purser can count. He keeps the best of them in a jar shaped like a ringed planet, which he says brings luck and which I say is just a jam jar with a lid painted by someone who had never seen Saturn.

Last Thursday a pink ring came loose from the cafe rack and went spinning out past the hull. Dunnock was off after it before I could shout, tether trailing like a bad ribbon. I hauled him back, and when we finally got it into the galley he was grinning and holding out a single gold coin, warm from his glove. Keep this for the ferry home, he said. Ferry's on the first of the month. I told him the coin was worth about one donut, and he said that was exactly my fare.

So I have the coin in my breast pocket and the planet jar on the shelf, and the stall smells of cinnamon even with the hum. Save me a seat by the window, Pip. I will bring the coin, two glazed rings, and the story about the time Dunnock nearly became a moon.
