Hello Kitty and sweets on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the Hello Kitty character with a red bow, surrounded by a pink cupcake, a rainbow, cherries, a rainbow lollipop, stars, hearts, a blue diamond and a strand of pearls. The outlines are bold and dark, with soft shading and bright fills in pink, yellow, blue, green and purple. The motifs are spread across the skin in a loose, scattered arrangement that fills the frame.

By the time the hooter goes for the back shift, you have counted your threepences twice on the step of Ada Pringle's shop, where the window is so crowded with sweets that the light comes through it in stripes. The rainbow lollipop costs two. The cherry bootlace costs one. You will have to choose, and you have never once been good at choosing.

Up the bank the winding wheel turns over Shafto Drift like a slow clock, and the slag heaps sit grey against a sky that cannot decide whether to rain. Your dad went down at six with his flask and his lamp. His tin lunchbox still has the sticker on its lid that you pressed there when you were seven, the white cat with the pink bow and the cupcake, the one the other lads tease him about and he never once peels off. You carry the lollipop up the track in its paper twist, turning it so the colours melt into one bright blur.

At the gate the banksman is calling names down the shaft, and the men come up one by one, black to the eyebrows, blinking at the daylight like owls. Your dad is last. He sees you and grins so the whites of his teeth show, then sees the sweet and laughs so hard he has to lean on the fence. You hold it out. He licks it once, slowly, and his tongue comes out striped red, yellow and green.

That night, after a bath that never gets him fully clean, he sits you on his knee and shows you what he has done to the lid of his tin. He has gone over the faded cat in biro, filled a blue diamond and a string of pearls round its neck, and drawn a tiny rainbow arching over the top. The lollipop stick is tucked into the hinge, still sticky. Nobody at the pit knows about that, he says, and you tell him it's our secret.
