Homer Simpson in a spacesuit with crisps
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon Homer Simpson wearing a clear astronaut helmet floats across the design, with his body in a white spacesuit and his hand reaching forward. Several yellow crisps drift around him, and a purple, teal and green starry background sits inside a black angular outline. The bold black linework is filled with flat, saturated colour, with some soft shading on the helmet and suit.

The supply boat is three days late, so by Thursday the only food left on Scarrow is the family-size bag of crisps you have been rationing since Monday. You are sitting on the harbour wall, trying to make the last one last, when the sky over the Atlantic turns the colour of a bruise and something the size of a tea tray starts to come down.

It is a man in a fishbowl helmet, dropping from nothing you can see, and he lands with a splash in the shallows beside the slipway. He stands up in a white suit gone grey at the knees, peers at you through the glass and says, very quietly, "Is that salt and vinegar?" He explains, at length and without once stopping for breath, that he was in orbit for six weeks, that the capsule came down in the wrong ocean, and that every crisp he packed for the trip has been floating round him ever since like a flock of confused gulls.
You hand over the bag. He eats the last crumbs with his glove off, which is a mistake, and then asks where the nearest shop is. You point up the hill at the shop with its shutter down and its sign reading OPEN in a font nobody has trusted since 1998.
On Thursday the boat finally docks. The skipper unloads eleven crates of crisps, a new fishing net, and a small envelope addressed to the man in the bay. Inside is one flattened crisp and a note in careful capitals: SAVE ME ONE. You tie a bag to the mooring rope and let it drift out, and somewhere past the headland a glass helmet catches the light and turns towards you.
