Kawaii puppy, bows and sweets on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three close-up photographs show a kawaii-style tattoo of a fluffy puppy wearing a teal bow, surrounded by ice creams, a paw print, a star, hearts and dots. A larger purple bow with a swirl lollipop appears in a second photograph, and a detail shot shows the green paw print and a pink ice cream. The linework is bold and black-outlined, with flat pastel fills and soft shading on the puppy's fur.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Third night running, the puppy scratched at the back door of Pell's Sweet Kitchen at quarter past two, and third night running I let him in, because a dog that fluffy has no business on Carrow Street after the last bus has gone.

He wore a teal bow tied tight under his chin, the sort you'd snip from a spool of sugar ribbon. Where he trod across the proving bench he left small round prints in flour, and I could have sworn the last one was faintly green. I broke a strawberry lollipop in half for him. He ate it politely, then sat down beside the ice cream freezer as though he was waiting for someone to call his stop.

On the fourth night he came back with a purple bow, bigger than the first and tied in a bolder knot, and a swirl lollipop clamped in his teeth. He dropped it at my feet. The tag on his collar read MILO, 14 HALLAM ROW, in looping pink stitching, and Hallam Row was the lane behind the bakery that shut in the spring. I walked there at dawn with the lollipop in my apron pocket. A woman in a dressing gown opened the door before I knocked and said he went out every night to leave one sweet on every step that had gone dark.

I still have the purple bow. It's pinned above the freezer, next to a star-shaped cutter that came from nowhere I can remember. Every night at two I leave the back door on the latch, and every night the flour on the bench has a few more small round prints in it.
