Cartoon bird on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon-style bird with wide round eyes, a teal crest and an open orange beak showing a pink tongue. The feathers are shaded in grey-blue scales with soft highlights, giving the character a rendered, three-dimensional look. It sits on the calf above an orange splash background, with colour inks dominating the design.

By the time the lift shuddered to a stop on the eleventh floor, you had already lost the argument with the bird. It was perched on the walkway rail outside flat 11C, one foot raised, staring at the bag of chips in your hand as if it had been expecting you all week.

Nobody on Hollin Court had seen anything like it. The crest was teal, the eyes were enormous and wet, and when the beak opened to shriek it showed a pink tongue the size of a bus ticket. Mrs Okafor from nine swore it was a gull that had escaped from the café by the bus stop. Mr Pell, who had lived on the ground floor since the blocks went up, said it was the ghost of a council officer who had refused him a skip licence in 1987. You said nothing. You were busy holding out a chip.

It took the chip, then the bag, then, with a flap that rattled every window in the stairwell, your hat. Dwayne the caretaker arrived with a broom and a face of deep suspicion, but the bird only tilted its head at him and croaked something that sounded very much like his name. By the end of the week it had a following. Kids left crusts on the bench. Someone painted a fat orange sun on the bin store wall, and the bird took to posing in front of it like a weather forecaster.

On Friday you came home to find the chip bag back on your doormat, folded with unnerving care, one chip left inside. Beside it lay a single grey-blue feather. You ate the chip. Some arguments you simply let the other side win.
