Beaker from The Muppets tattoo
Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the Muppets character Beaker standing with his large round eyes, red nose and orange flame-like hair, with his hands raised in fists. Shading is soft and cartoon-like, with defined outlines and blended tones across the face, collar and hands. Warm orange, red and green ink dominate, and the words MEEP MEEP are lettered across the knuckles in a simple block style.

Nobody in Hollin Drift took Mr Cole seriously, and you least of all. He kept the lamp room at the top of the shaft, a brick hut that smelled of paraffin and wet wool, and his orange hair stood up as if his own flames had singed it. Whenever the gauge needle crept past the red line, he thumped both fists on the bench and cried meep meep until the cap-lamps rattled on their hooks.

The men called it his weather report. Dai Pennock winked at you and said the old fellow was off again, and you laughed along and filled the oil cans. You were seventeen and sure of the world, which in a mining village mostly means trusting the ground to hold. The gauge was only a gauge, you thought, and Mr Cole only a nervous man with bright eyes.
On the Thursday the needle went past the red and kept going. Cole was already on his feet, knuckles raised, meeping at the top of his voice. You opened your mouth to laugh and found you could not. You ran down the sloping yard shouting at the cage man, the bell rang, and the men came up out of the dark one by one, coughing, lamps dead in their hands, because the cage had been stopped in time.
Afterwards nobody called it the weather report. Cole sat in the lamp room with his knuckles scraped raw and a cup of tea going cold beside him. When you came in to thank him he only held up his fists and grinned, and you understood that he had never been afraid of the dark, only of being the one nobody listened to.
