The wagon had squeaky wheels from the bottom of Grandad's shed, and every Saturday it was my job to pull it down Hallow Road while my brother Ansel sat in the back with his hair on end, giving orders. Bramble stood behind him with both paws on Ansel's shoulders. Bramble was a striped stuffed tiger with one good ear and a tail that kept catching in the spokes. He did not pull. He had opinions about the route, and he delivered them over Ansel's head like a captain on a ferry.

That Saturday the route ran past Mrs Okonedo's front garden, where a concrete gnome held a fishing rod and had clearly been planning something. Ansel decided the gnome was an enemy spy. He ordered a charge. I put my shoulder into the handle, the wheels shrieked, and we took the corner at a speed that broke several laws of physics and most of a privet hedge. Bramble roared, which was a bit much for a stuffed animal, and the gnome did not flinch, because gnomes have discipline.

Mum sent us both to our rooms that evening, though Ansel got the extra ten minutes for the hedge. Lying on my bed, I heard the wagon wheels creak along the landing, slow and deliberate, and stop outside my door. Nothing happened for a long time. In the morning there was a note tucked under my pillow in Ansel's capitals: YOU ARE CAPTAIN NOW. BRAMBLE SAYS SORRY. I took the front of the wagon and pulled, and nobody argued about the route again.
