Cat on crescent moon with planet symbols
Other · Colour · Photo
A purple cat with large expressive eyes and a pink bow sits inside a golden crescent moon, with a small crescent above its head. Coloured planet and sign symbols in orange, green, blue, pink and red sit around the moon, linked by fine dotted lines, with a golden brooch-like ornament at the lower left. Bold dark outlines and flat, solid colour fills give the piece a cartoon look, with soft teal shading behind the cat.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mr Pritchard had run the pawnshop on Scotland Road for thirty-one years, and in all that time the shop cat had never once looked at a customer the way it looked at the woman on Tuesday. It sat on the glass counter with its tail wrapped round its feet, eyes wide as shillings, and did not blink while she unwrapped a tissue from her coat pocket.

Inside the tissue was a compact the colour of old marmalade, a golden crescent moon curled around a cracked mirror, with a little bow of pale pink enamel at the hinge. Pritchard turned it over under his lamp. Round the edge ran a ring of coloured discs marked with planet signs, orange and green and blue, and he counted six before she said, 'The seventh is in the tray. I brought it so you'd know it's all there.' She wanted twenty pounds. He offered twelve. The cat made a small sound like a kettle thinking about it, and she laughed and said her gran would have liked that cat. She took the twelve and left the compact behind.
That night Pritchard came back for his reading glasses and found the cat sitting on the compact, paws folded over the mirror, staring at the seventh disc where he had left it in the tray. By morning the tray was empty, the disc lay on the cracked mirror as neat as a coin, and the cat was back on the counter with its eyes open, as if nothing had happened.
He wrote the ticket himself: Not for sale. He wrapped the compact in its tissue and set it on the top shelf, where the cat could see it from the counter. Every evening after that the little gold moon caught the lamplight, and every evening the cat blinked at it once, slowly, as if a visitor had finally come home.
