Cartoon cat and hearts on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a pair of ankles below rolled black jeans, with patent ballet flats that have cartoon face designs on the toes. On the left ankle is a cartoon cat head drawn in grey outline with soft grey shading, and on the right ankle are two small outlined hearts. The plain lilac background keeps the focus on the black and grey linework.

You find the cat asleep on the seed trays in the potting shed on the third morning of the Fenwick Hall show, curled round a pink bow that has slipped over one ear. Her collar tag says Pimm, and she has the expression of someone who has never once been asked to leave a room.

The committee wants the prize dahlias in the marquee by noon, and you have spent a month coaxing them along. Pimm watches from the windowsill while you wrap the stems in damp newspaper. Each time you turn round she has moved a little further down the path, leaving grey prints in the frost, and at the far wall she stops and looks back as if to say the flowers were never the point.
By the gate you find two hearts scratched into the wet gravel with a hazel twig, one fat and one neat. Mrs Ibbotson from the allotments says the tomcat from number nine has been leaving them every evening, though she has never seen him sit still long enough to draw anything.
You carry the last dahlia across the field and, when you come back, Pimm is gone. The bow lies on the bench, tied neatly around a sprig of lavender, and you stand there holding it for longer than you mean to.
