The bridge at Haddow Mere went under on a Tuesday, which Gerald Fenwick took as a personal insult to the parks budget. He had chaired the committee for nineteen years and had never once been required to get his feet wet. Now the primary school stood on the far bank with forty-two children and a kiln of unfired pottery, and the only way across was the old orange canoe chained to the boathouse, the one that had leaked since the Coronation.

Nobody else volunteered. Mrs Ogden offered her husband, who was in Torquay. The fire brigade offered a dinghy with no oars. Gerald smoothed his moustache, which took some time, and said that a chairman who would not paddle his own committee was merely a man in a cardigan. He laid the paddle across his lap and pushed off into a grey drizzle, his swept-back hair already beaded with rain.

The crossing took eleven minutes by his pocket watch. Halfway over, the canoe took on water, so he bailed with a Tupperware lid while reciting the minutes of the last meeting, which he knew by heart and which nobody had asked for. The children cheered when he bumped the jetty. Gerald climbed out, wrung out his tail and handed the headteacher a folder of forms regarding the pottery kiln.

On the walk back to the bank, a girl in a yellow raincoat asked whether he was frightened. Gerald considered the question with the seriousness it deserved. Then he looked across the water at the orange boat drifting towards the reeds, and resolved that the committee would fund a proper one with a dry hull. He would paddle that one too.
