Cartoon cat pirate on a sailing ship

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat character wearing a red bow, an eye patch and a striped top appears in the hull of a sailing ship with orange-brown sails and a red pennant at the masthead. Bold black outlines and flat colour fills define the ship, with green waves and a red sun or glow beneath the hull. The design wraps across the forearm and the colour ink dominates the composition.

Dear Wendeline,

The Thimble Queen limped into Port Corbel on Tuesday with her foresail in ribbons and her red pennant still flying, which Captain Tilly Marrowbone insists is the only thing that matters. She is a white cat, no taller than a ship's biscuit tin, with a red bow the size of a dinner plate and a black patch over one eye. The crew call her the Admiral when she is pleased and something rude when she is not, and the carpenter has been told both this week.

We met the storm off the Sunken Teeth, where the waves turn green as bottle glass and the sun sets red as a poached plum. Tilly stood on the quarterdeck in her striped jersey and shouted orders at the wind as if it owed her money. When the mainmast cracked she hauled the rigging herself, claws hooked in the ropes, and nobody laughed at her, not once.

Last night, in the tavern, I asked her why a cat needs an eye patch. She laid a paw over the patch and said the sun over the Teeth is too bright to look at straight, and a sensible sailor only looks at it with one eye. Then she winked the other, and I understood she was not talking about the sun at all.

Tell Father the rope he sent is the wrong gauge. The Admiral says so, and she is right about everything except the bow, which she has promised to take off the day she retires.

Yours in salt and ink, Odile
