Fine line black outline of a map-shaped landmass on the inner wrist, shown on a bare forearm.

Outline map shape on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black line outlines a simple map-style shape on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the tattoo is the outline only. The skin is light and the photo has a warm tone, with a blurred brown background and a patterned fabric and white cloth at the lower right.

The nib had to stay down the whole way round. Mr Ashdown said a line lifted was a lie told, and he had made me redraw the opening bend eleven times before I could keep the ink flowing from start to finish. We worked in the top room of the survey office, where the window looked straight down the pass to the lorries grinding up the grade in low gear.

We were tracing a territory that appeared on no map the government sold, a country of one long lake and a bent finger of hills. I laid the outline in black each morning, and each evening Ashdown sat with his brandy and checked it against a pencil sketch his father had made before the war. He never once said it was right. He only said it was not yet wrong.

On the third Thursday of October the wind came over the col hard enough to rattle the shutters, and my hand jerked at the eastern notch where the coast turns back on itself. The line lifted. A small spur, no longer than a fingernail, stuck out into the empty paper. I waited for him to scold me. Instead he leaned close, looked for a long time, and said, 'Leave it. That is where the others came in.'

He died the following spring. When the office was cleared, the sheet was still rolled in the drawer, the little black hook still standing at the edge of a country nobody had named. I carried it home under my arm through the pass in the rain, and I have not drawn a line since without leaving a place for someone to step through.
