Cartoon character and flower on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon woman with red hair and round glasses stands with her arms folded, wearing a green jacket over a yellow top. Below her, a white flower with black outlines and a yellow centre sits among teal and green leaves, and a partial line of black lettering runs along the left edge. The bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills are typical of traditional tattooing, shown on a forearm against a dark background.

Sit down, Pruitt, and stop fiddling with that rope. You want the story of the green coat or the story of the ship? They're the same story, though the ship comes out worse.

Her name was Marjorie Quine, and she came aboard the Cormorant at Gravesend with one carpetbag, a pair of round spectacles mended with wire, and a jacket the colour of pond weed. She folded her arms before she'd even said good morning. Mr Haddow, the bosun, took it as an insult. I took it as a sign she'd be no trouble, which shows what I knew. Above her bunk hung a tin sign reading BE CONQUERED, and she swore it had been there when she boarded.
By the Azores she had catalogued every rope in the hold, corrected the navigator's chart in pencil, and fallen out with the cook over the proper use of nutmeg. Nobody could make her unfold those arms. When the squall took the foremast in the Bay of Biscay, she stood at the rail with her glasses misting over and watched the sea come at us as if it had an appointment, and she never once shifted her weight.
Then the water got into the hold and soaked the seed crates the owners had bought for a garden in Brazil that nobody had planted. Pale little flowers came up through the wet sacking. Marjorie went down with a lantern, came up with a face like thunder, and informed the whole crew they were not, under any circumstances, to call it a miracle. We made Recife with a cargo of nothing but blossom and a ship that Haddow swore had been conquered entirely by a woman in a green coat. I still keep one white bloom pressed in my logbook. Say what you like about her, lad, but she never did unfold those arms.
