Cartoon character with book and rose on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon woman with auburn hair and round glasses, wearing a green jacket, holds an open book with the words "Everything Sucks" printed on its page. She sits inside a purple heart with sparkles, edged by an orange scalloped border, and a large red rose with green leaves and small yellow and pink flowers sits below. Bold black outlines and flat areas of colour are used throughout, against the skin of a forearm resting on white paper towel.

Dear Marnie,

You will be pleased to hear the ferry did not sink, though Dad went green and held the rail as if it owed him money. I have finished the book you lent me, the one with the girl on the cover who looks like she has already read the ending. Your margin notes are very encouraging. Beside the line where the hero swears he will never leave the town, you wrote "lies" in capitals, which I did not expect from you.
The light up here has been out since Tuesday. Dad says the bulb is fine and the lens is fine and it is the wiring that has opinions. So every evening he climbs the iron stairs with a torch clamped in his teeth, and I sit at the kitchen table doing sums while the dark comes up off the sea like someone pulling a blanket over the island. Mrs Keill from the cottages brought round a red rose in a jam jar, grown in a garden that is more wind than soil, and said it was for the keeper's girl. I told her I am not a girl, I am a person with a library card, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the step.
Last night the bulb came on at half past nine and the whole room went white. The rose on the table threw a shadow up the wall, a slow red heart pulsing on the plaster. I thought of you, and of the way you say everything sucks when you mean the opposite. I am beginning to think the book was right about some things, and that the sea is not as bad as I told you it was.
Write back. Tell me the ferry times, and whether you have found anyone worth being cross with.
Love, Juno
