Cartoon character eating popcorn in a heart
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bald cartoon character lies back and eats popcorn from a striped bucket, framed inside a pink scalloped heart with a black outline and a lilac background. The linework is bold and black, with flat fills and simple shading on the figure and bucket. The palette is bright and saturated, with pink, teal, yellow and peach, and the heart sits on the thigh with parts of other tattoos visible at the left edge.

Eugene had been lying flat on the settee since the adverts, a striped bucket balanced on his belly like a sleeping cat, and when Marjorie came in from the allotment with mud on her knees he didn't even turn his head. He just opened his mouth wide, the way the baby birds do at the bird table, and waited for her to tell him off.

"Where did you get popcorn?" she said. "The maize went in the shed in October with the rest of the seed."
"Hollin Lane. They sell it by weight now, under the chip shop, next to the batteries." He tipped the bucket and a yellow avalanche slid into the cushions. "I brought the bucket back as well. The one from Skegness, the one I won at the rifle range in 1987 by hitting a tin duck nobody else could see."
She had meant to be cross. Instead she sat on the arm of the settee and took a fistful, and the salt was sharp on her fingers, and the telly showed the old lighthouse keeper climbing his spiral stairs for the thousandth time, while Eugene hummed the theme as if he had written it himself.
Later she found a single kernel wedged in the seam of his good cardigan, hard as a button. She left it where it was, the way he had left the tin duck on the mantelpiece for thirty-seven years, and went to put the kettle on.
