Homer Simpson hugging himself in a donut heart
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon Homer Simpson embraces his own reflection-like double at the centre of a heart-shaped pink donut with multicoloured sprinkles. A pale lilac banner beneath the figures reads LOVE THYSELF, and the design sits on the outer forearm. Thick black outlines and flat, bright yellow, pink and grey fills give it a bold, cartoon-like finish.

Our Alf never ate a doughnut he hadn't made himself, which is why the pink ones with the hundreds and thousands only went in the window on Fridays. Ninety-one and still up at four to knead, flour on his forearms like frost on the spoil heap. He called them hearts, not doughnuts, because the tin he got from the Co-op came shaped like one and he wasn't about to waste a good mould.

The winter the pit shut, the shop went quiet. Nobody had coppers for a bun. Alf stood at the counter with a tray of unsold hearts and gave them away to the lads hanging about outside the Working Men's Club. When Dennis Hoy asked why he was giving away the lot, Alf said a man needed something to do with his hands besides hold a placard. Peggy, his wife, said he was daft, and she was right, but she bought one anyway.
Peggy went first, in the spring. Alf kept the shop open. One morning I found him in the back room with flour dusted down his good jumper, arms wrapped round the kneading board like it was a person. I'd have laughed if his face hadn't looked so badly sorry for itself. He saw me in the doorway and didn't let go. 'Forty years I've been cuddling a lump of dough,' he said, 'and it's the only thing that never once asked me to get over it.'
Next Valentine's he had the signwriter from Ferryhill paint a lilac banner across the window. I told him it was soppy. He said LOVE THYSELF was the only instruction he'd ever managed to follow properly, then sold me the last heart for tuppence, which we both knew was a lie, because nobody in the village had tuppence left by then.
