Pin-up with Coca-Cola bottle on full sleeve

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A pin-up woman with rolled hair and a red flower stands in a blue swimsuit, holding a glass bottle, beside a palm tree, a sun and a red Coca-Cola cooler bag. The work uses smooth, realistic shading with defined outlines on the figure and softer blending in the sky and sea. Blues, greens, reds and warm skin tones dominate, and the scene wraps from the shoulder down the upper arm.

Ivy had sold forty bottles of Starlite by eleven, which the council man said was a record for a Tuesday, and she told him Tuesdays had never been what they used to be. The sun was already hard on the boards. The palm in its tub outside the Ocean Rest had come up from Bournemouth on a lorry and looked as homesick as anybody.

Maud came down the pier at half past with her hair set for the Pavilion dance and wanted Ivy to shut up the kiosk. "You'll be chained to that cool bag your whole life," she said, lifting the red canvas from its hook and shaking it like a bad purse. "Come on. Ronnie's bringing a friend with a motorbike."

"Somebody has to sell the pop to the people who come for the sea," Ivy said. "The sea doesn't carry itself."

Maud left in a huff, and at four o'clock Ivy found a green bottle on the bench by the rail, still cold, with a slip of paper folded under the cap. The handwriting leaned like it was running for a bus. It said: For the woman who looks like she's waiting for the tide to turn. Nothing else. She turned it over twice, looking for a name, and found only the dent of a thumb in the wax seal.

She drank it standing up, the bubbles stinging her nose. Then she rinsed the bottle, set it on the ledge where the sun could catch the glass, and poured the next one for herself as the gulls came down over the water.
