Mo Tanner had been painting the same woman on the Gaiety Gallopers' booth for eleven summers, and she still had not got her elbows right. Every spring the canvas came out of the van smelling of damp tarpaulin, and every spring Mo sat on an upturned crate with a tin of red lake and a rag and tried to make the woman look like she had somewhere better to be. Long red hair, purple gloves to the elbow, a bodice the colour of boiled sweets. The lads on the rides called her Ruby, because Mo had once said she was the only honest woman on the coast.

The trouble started in Skegness, when the new owner, a man in a camel overcoat called Desmond Pyke, leaned against the board and tapped it with a cigarette. "Make her a bit more of a looker," he said. Mo told him she was already the best-looking thing on the seafront. Pyke laughed, dropped his butt in a puddle, and went off to count the takings in his caravan.
That night the wind came in off the sea and the tarpaulin cracked like rifle fire. Mo, half asleep in the van, heard boots on the booth steps. She went out with a torch and found nothing but gulls and the smell of linseed. In the morning the bodice was darker than she had left it, and the raised arm had come down to rest on the rail, as if the woman were about to step off the board and into the crowd. At the foot of the painting, where Mo had never painted anything, three blue daisies had opened in a row.
Pyke came down the steps in his shirtsleeves, looked the board up and down, and nodded. "Much better. Bigger, isn't she?"
Mo didn't argue. She was already packing the tin.
