Cartoon character sleeve with flowers and a jar

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon blue character resembling Stitch holds a small green frog-like creature, with the figures set against a dark blue background speckled with glowing yellow and orange dots. Below them, a glass jar with a lid holds glowing insects, surrounded by pink and red flowers and green leaves. The bold outlines, smooth colour blends and highlights give the piece a vivid, illustrative look across the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler at the Hollin Mere dance hall would not start playing until the lamps were lit, and the lamps were never lit until old Mab Kettering had walked down from the hill carrying her jar. Nobody asked what was inside it. They knew it was fireflies, because on dark nights the glass glowed like a pocket of stars and the lane smelt of wet clover.

One autumn a creature came down the lane beside her. It was blue, the colour of a pond under cloud, with ears that flapped like fins and eyes so wide the mill children swore it must always be surprised. A small green frog sat on its shoulder and croaked the same tune over and over, slightly flat. The fiddler laughed and said the frog could come in provided it kept time.

All night the creature danced with the girls from the mill, badly and joyfully, swinging them round until their skirts flew out like bells. When the last waltz ended, Mab lifted her lid, and the fireflies rose and drifted over the boards, lighting the faces of everyone who had stayed. The fiddler always said the creature had waltzed the moths out of the rafters, and that a dragonfly had been waiting at the door the whole time to watch.

Mab never told anyone where the creature went at dawn. But the next summer the pink bindweed climbed the hall's wall, and every September a blue shape was seen on the hill with a frog on its shoulder, waiting for the lamps to come on.
