Moray eel and clownfish on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A spotted yellow moray eel with its mouth open rises above two orange and white clownfish swimming through green and purple anemone. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the eel's skin and fins. The photo shows the same tattoo twice side by side, and the skin around the lower leg is visible at the edges.

The anemone has folded itself shut again by the time you reach the pool, and the two clownfish have already vanished into its purple arms like children hiding from a bath. You kneel on the cold slate where your grandmother knelt for forty summers and wait. Nothing moves except the weed. Then Gerald, the old moray who has lived under the north ledge since before the lighthouse was painted, lifts his speckled head out of the gap and opens his jaws in what she always swore was a greeting.

She called the pool her garden, and she was not joking. She had hauled the anemones in from the lower rocks in buckets, one at a time, and pinned them with cement and prayer. Every spring she counted the clowns, and every autumn she came up one short and blamed the gulls. Gerald she never counted. He was the gardener, she said, and the gardener is never on the list.
The summer you turned fourteen she stopped coming down the steps. The tide came in on a Tuesday and went out on a Wednesday, and the pool was full of brown wrack and nothing else. You went every day after school with a jam jar and a bent spoon, scooping sand and talking to the rock like a fool. On the ninth day the anemone opened. A small orange face pushed out between the tentacles, looked at you with enormous disapproval, and dived back in.
You stayed on the slate until the light went. Then you pressed your palm flat against the cold water, the way she used to, and waited for the old eel to come up and take a look at you. He did. He always does, she would say, when the right person is weeding.
