Cartoon flower bouquet with bow on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of stylised cartoon flowers, including pansies with smiling faces, rises up the limb and ends in a blue bow with a turquoise gem at the centre. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat areas of pink, purple, orange, yellow, blue and green. The design is set against bare skin and is shown from the front with the bow at the bottom of the frame.

Put another peat on the fire, Davy, and hush now, for this is the bit where the pansies start grinning. You know the supply boat from the mainland that comes in on a Tuesday with the cut stems wrapped in wet newspaper? Well, the spring that Nell Crossan's man went out on the Morwenna and never came back in, a bunch arrived at her door with no card. Just a bow of blue ribbon knotted round the stems, and sewn into the middle of it a green stone the colour of the water off the Gap.

Nell put them in the brown jug on the kitchen sill, and that was when the trouble started. There were rose-coloured ones with their eyes shut tight, as if they were having a good laugh at a joke nobody else had heard. There was a purple one with a black face that creased up whenever the wind came off the harbour. And there was the orange one at the top, with whiskers like old Tibbs who sat on the wall outside the chapel. Every morning they had turned their faces to the window, and every night, when the wireless came on with the shipping forecast, they giggled. Nell swore to the minister it was the wind through the cracks in the glass.

On the ninth night she followed the sound down to the shore, and there on the rocks at the Gap sat a man in a sodden oilskin, laughing fit to burst at the sea. He had not drowned. He had been picked up by a trawler out of Penzance, and he had sent the flowers from there, and he had tied on the blue bow himself because the ribbon was the only thing he had left in his pocket.

Nell still has that jug. The bow is still on it, faded to the grey of a gull's back, and the green stone is always warm when you pick it up, even in January.
