I am writing because the lift has been out since Tuesday and you asked me to put it in writing for the council, so here it is, plus the other thing. On the fourth floor, Dani Lowe keeps a tree in a pot on the walkway. It is a dwarf apple, bought from the garden centre on the ring road, and it has finally given three fruit. Dani counts them every morning like they are coins.

Yesterday the smallest one went missing. Dani's little brother Kit, who is six and has a red jumper with the sleeves always pushed up, was found standing on the bin store roof with his arm stretched out as far as it would go. He said the apple had fallen and rolled over the edge and he was going to catch it. There was nothing there. I told him to come down before he fell, and he said the apple was waiting for him, which I thought an odd thing for a child to say, but then he climbed down anyway.

The apple turned up in the stairwell by the bins this morning, red and bruised, with a bite gone out of one side. Nobody in the block will own up. Dani says it wasn't her and Kit says it was the wind.

Anyway, the lift. Please chase them again. And tell the council the stairs are wet.
