Simple cat outline on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single black outline of a stylised cartoon cat sits on the top of a foot, with two dot eyes, a small nose, whiskers and a tail curling up at the side. The lines are uniform and clean, with no shading, and the cat is the only element in the design. The image is a close, straight-on photo against a white textured surface, and the red toenail polish is the only colour in the frame.

Dear Nell,

Don't believe Mick when he tells you the cat jumped ship at Peterhead. She didn't jump. She strolled down the gangway the morning of the big gale, sat on a coil of rope by the wheelhouse door, and refused to get off until the skipper handed over a fish head. Ginger, we call her, though she's more the colour of wet sand, and she has the cheek of a bailiff.

She's the only one aboard who isn't frightened of the Captain. He stomps about the deck swearing at the hydraulics and she trots after him, tail up like a question mark, then sits on his boots until he laughs. You'd like her. She holds her whiskers out in the spray as if she's measuring the swell, and when the boat rolls she never slides, just leans, like she's been told the sea is a joke she already knows.

Last Tuesday the net snagged on the seabed and we lost two days' work. Everyone was sulking over the mess in the hold. Then the cat walked the length of the rail, stopped at the far stanchion, and started yowling at nothing. Mick swore she'd gone soft in the head. Half an hour later a fin whale surfaced exactly where she'd been staring, close enough to rock the hull. Nobody called her mad after that. Anyway, the skipper says we're in for two more weeks, so tell Mum the money's good and I'm eating properly. Tell her the cat sends her love, or at least a dignified nod. Love, Tom
