Cow tattoo on a belly

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A man lifts his shirt to show a large black and grey tattoo across his abdomen. The tattoo is a cow drawn in fine black outline with wispy lines above its back, and a dark filled circle at the navel forms part of the design. The shading is light and the image is framed close on the belly against a plain background.

Mind the wire, my son, and keep your hands where the guard can see them while he reads you. That is how the old women of Kessen Ford taught it, and it is how the cow learned it too, though she had no pockets to speak of. She came up to the crossing at first light with her breath going up in long white loops, a dark ring at her middle like a hole burned through a coin, and the guard on the gate, a boy called Tomas Brenning who had not yet grown into his moustache, stepped back and said she had no papers.

Her keeper was a widow named Irena Halv, who had walked the cow over the hills from Lower Vesk since the thaw. Irena did not raise her voice. She opened the old ledger her grandmother had carried across the same ford forty years before, and she showed the boy a line in faded ink: one cow, black and white, a mark at the navel, crossed for the sake of the milk. The boy read it twice. Then he read the stamp beside it, which was the stamp of a border that no longer existed, and he laughed the way young men laugh when they are frightened.

The cow lowered her head to the wire. Steam rose from her back in thin curling lines and drifted over the posts, and where it touched the frost the frost went soft and gave way like warm butter. Tomas found himself holding the gate open with both hands. When he finally looked down at the ledger again, the ink had run into the shape of a bridge, and the cow was already on the far bank, unhurried, leaving a trail of small dark coins in the mud behind her, one for every step she had taken on his side of the river.
