Cartoon dough character on a belly

Other · Colour · Photo

A large cartoon dough character wearing a white chef's hat with a blue band and a blue neckerchief is tattooed at the centre of a belly, surrounded by a red and white outlined halo. The words LUV DA DOUGH curve around the figure in bold yellow, red and blue letters, with smaller script lettering and blue swirls filling the skin on either side. The shading is soft and the palette is bright, with colour ink dominating the composition.

Mrs Pilling kept a rule taped above the bread bin at Gull Crest, the seaside boarding house where you spent three summers scrubbing pans: the dough is never rushed. Above the bin, painted on the pantry door by a lodger who owed her money, grinned a little dough fellow in a tall white hat, arms wide, as if he had just been pulled from the oven and was delighted about it.

On the Friday before the coach trips, the bread refused to rise. Sea fog came in thick off the harbour and sat against the windows, and the lodgers started complaining in the hall. Mrs Pilling stood over the proving bowl with her arms folded. 'Talk to it,' she said. You laughed, and she did not. So you leaned close, flour on your cheek, and told the dough about your brother's wedding, the cold bath water, the bus you missed, and the lie you had told about the cellar key.

By morning the dough had swelled to twice its size and pushed the cloth clean off the bowl. Mrs Pilling pressed a floury thumb into it, watched the dent spring back, and nodded once. 'Well,' she said, 'he's listening now.' Behind you, on the pantry door, the painted fellow seemed to wink, though you had long since decided that was only the damp.
