Green monster and yellow car on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a green cartoon monster with bulging eyes, a wide toothy mouth and a long red tongue. Behind it sit a yellow car, a paint can labelled with a number one, a green hand and an eyeball on a purple stalk, all set against a blue and orange flame background. Thick black outlines, flat fills and bold shading give it a retro cartoon look.

The monster had been trying to climb out of the mural since Tuesday, and Dessie Pryce had stopped blaming the damp. He stood on the step ladder at Gull Street Motors with a sable brush in one hand and a mug of stewed tea going cold on the bonnet of a chopped coupe, watching the green thing lean over the lintel with its tongue hanging down like a wet flannel.

Mr Okonedo had ordered a car, not a nightmare. He wanted yellow, a bit of flame, something for the lads at the Sunday meet. Dessie had sketched a number one on a paint can and nothing else, and had meant to add a small green hand in the corner as a joke. The hand kept getting bigger. Last Thursday the eyeball on its purple stalk swivelled to follow him across the workshop, and the wet gloss on the tin kept looking wet long after it had dried.
He tried to paint over it on Friday with a flat grey. By morning the grey had gone the colour of pond water and the monster was grinning through it, teeth first. Dessie sat down on an upturned drum of primer and admitted, to nobody but the radio, that the thing had good taste. It liked the car. It liked the flames. It wanted the number one left exactly as it was.
So he left the paint can alone and finished the pinstripes. When Mr Okonedo collected the coupe on Saturday, he ran a thumb along the yellow panel and grinned. Dessie did not mention the green hand on the rear quarter, which had been waving at customers since Friday, or the way the eyeball had gone quiet and half closed its lid. Some work, he reckoned, finishes itself.
