Cartoon faces and masked figure tattooed on fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held up close to the camera with cartoon-style tattoos on the fingers. One finger shows a dark masked figure in a balaclava, and another shows a simple face with a hand covering its mouth, with a further hand outline tattooed below. The shading is black and grey with bold outlines and simple solid fills, set against an orange wall and studio chairs in the background.

The balaclava was the first thing wrong with it, and Ivy Platt said so before the constable had his notebook out. Black wool, she said, and nobody in Thornby knitted black unless they were in mourning or in trouble. Stan Rudd was the other one, the quiet one, who stood at the back of the Co-operative with one finger lifted to his lips as though the till might overhear. He had promised Ray two things: that he would hold the door, and that he would say nothing to anybody, not to his wife, not to the priest, not to the dog. He kept the second promise better than the first. Nobody in Thornby ever heard Stan say a word about that Tuesday, which was rather the trouble, because the constable could find no one willing to speak for either of them.
The money was never found. What turned up in the drain behind the bakery was a sock full of halfpennies and a pair of gloves with the fingertips cut off, and Ivy swore she had seen those gloves before, on the hands of the manager's daughter, who could not hold a pencil straight, let alone a crowbar. Ray got six months at Lincoln. Stan got married to Ivy's sister the spring after, and at every wedding since, folk have seen him lift one finger to his lips when the vicar asks if anyone knows cause why they should not be joined.
