Zombie faces on two fingers
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two fingers are shown close together, each decorated with a cartoon zombie face. The green finger has a pink exposed brain on its tip, with pale eyes and an open dark mouth, while the pale finger has a green hand reaching across it. The linework is bold and the shading is simple, with flat areas of green, red and grey on smooth skin.

Ronnie, the green one, was the older of the pair. A man who drank his wages had carved him from lime wood in 1957, and he wore his pink brain like a bonnet, proud of it. Every evening he called across the gap to Dolly, the pale one, who lay flat on the cash tray with her hand stretched over the till as if she were always about to grab a coin or a sleeve.
"You've been reaching for that tenner since the summer," he said. "Leave the poor man his change."
Dolly didn't answer. She had been shaped more recently, in a damp shed in Ramsgate, and she had learned to keep quiet about the things that frightened her. Tonight the gale tore the tarpaulin off the hut, and a small boy stood in the doorway with his mum's purse clutched in one fist, staring at them both with his mouth open.
Dolly let her fingers uncurl. The boy stepped forward, set a crumpled ten-pound note on the tray, and took a pink rock from the jar without a word. Ronnie grumbled about the cheek of it, but when the door banged shut behind the child he shifted his bonnet a fraction towards the draught, so Dolly could feel the warmth of the heater too.
